Preconference Workshops, Friday, March 4, 2011

  • Cengage Learning, Brooks/Cole is making five presentations from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Tahoo Room. Two sessions on a new developmental math series that supports the development of traditional algebraic skills and problem solving through the inclusion of innovative applications.
    • Session 1, 8:00-9:30am: Focus on the Elementary Algebra text.
    • Session 2, 10:00-11:30am: Focus on the Intermediate Algebra text.
    • Session 3, noon-1:30pm: Focus on another new developmental math series that integrates a study-skills approach and encourages students to overcome math mindbenders.
    • Session 4, 2:00-3:30pm: Discuss the experiences of an instructor using the algorithmic online homework system, Enhanced WebAssign(tm).
    • Session 5, 4:00-5:30pm: Focus on new technology for Calculus instructors and students designed to improve learning outcomes and provide flexible teaching.
    We are offering a $100 honorarium per session as a token of thanks and light refreshments will be served. Our goal for these sessions is to ensure that we fully address your needs and those of your students as we develop these textbooks and other products.   • Thinkwell is presenting from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Shasta Room.
    Developing Thinkwell's Intro to Statistics
    Thinkwell replaces expensive textbooks (that students don't read) with video instruction that students love. Thinkwell is developing an Intro to Statistics course and you can have input. Mark from Thinkwell will give a brief demo on how the Thinkwell products work, and if your department is interested, you can work with Thinkwell to make sure the new Intro to Stats course will meet your needs. We'll also talk about:

    ClassPad Basics
    If you are wondering what the ClassPad is or if it is easy to use, please attend this workshop and learn about this amazing tool. The audience will participate in hands-on activities that can be used in Algebra, Geometry and beyond as you learn the ClassPad basics. One ClassPad 330 handheld and one CASIO Exilim camera will be given away during the workshop!!


  • Pearson Education is presenting from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Sequoia Room.
    Meeting the Challenge! Three Years of Redesign...and Counting!
    Speaker: Karen Wyrick, Cleveland State Community College
    Karen Wyrick is the chair of the math department at Cleveland State Community College, where they have implemented course redesign throughout the department. Karen will highlight the details of the redesign project while giving an update on the college courses that were added to the redesign last year. She will also share the results of a study of the redesign and its impact on student success - both in developmental and college math. Karen has also been working with high schools to introduce course redesign through dual enrollment programs, and will share those results as well.
